Graduation photos — one day, four parties, fifty photographers
Graduation is unusual as an occasion: it consists of several entirely separate events on the same day, with different people present at each. That makes it harder to document than almost any other celebration.
Four occasions, four different audiences
First the ceremony, where the class and the parents gather outside the school. Then the parade, where only the class is present and no adult sees anything. Then the reception at home, where relatives, neighbours and family friends come by in turn. Then the evening party, where only peers remain.
No single person attends all four. The parents never see the parade. The classmates never see the reception. Grandma sees nothing after three o'clock. The graduate is the only one who was there the whole way, which is exactly why that person has the hardest time assembling a complete picture of their own day.
The parade photos disappear first
Those photos are taken almost exclusively by classmates and end up in their camera rolls, on Snapchat, and in temporary groups that get emptied after a couple of weeks. Six months later there's barely anything left.
That's a shame, because those are often the photos that matter most in hindsight. Put the QR code in the class group before the parade sets off, not just at the reception — that way those photos come in while they're still on the phones.
The reception: many guests, a short time each
At a reception guests arrive in waves and stay twenty minutes. That's long enough to take photos and far too short to do anything with them afterwards.
This is why a physical QR code on site is so much more effective than a link sent in advance. Put the code by the cake table and the gift table, where every guest pauses at some point during their visit. Mention it when you thank them for the present and many will upload on the spot.
Set it up early — the day itself is too hectic
Graduation day is one of the most time-pressured days a family goes through. Nobody should be creating an event at seven in the morning between the cake order and the flower arrangements.
Create the event a few weeks ahead, print the codes and put them in a pile with the napkins. Send the link to the class group and the family at the same time as the reception invitation. It takes ten minutes in April and saves half an hour in June.
Afterwards: remind once, then download
